National Honor Society Behind the Scenes

NHS students work the blood drive in coordination with the Red Cross

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at community events in Wylie? If you look, you will see Wylie high school students involved.

The National Honor Society (NHS) at Wylie high school is charged with the task of promoting scholarship, service, character, citizenship, and leadership. The National Honor Society seeks out intelligent students with character to work in the community as role models and servicemen. This process of inductions is very selective, and it is considered an honor just to be nominated for membership. If they are admitted, the members are expected to perform service events every six weeks, and maintain high academic standards at all times.

“We are supposed to be the example of service here in Wylie,” said Victor Vinh, president of the Wylie chapter. “We enjoy spending time helping people, and we especially love our friendly rivalry with the East chapter!”

The rivalry kicked off in earnest last year as a fundraising competition was hosted between both high schools. The task was to earn the highest sum of money for Collin County’s Habitat for Humanity through internet donations, which provide houses for eligible low income families. As an extra wrinkle, both schools made a friendly wager in which the loser had to wear the mascot attire from the opposite school. Wylie ultimately won this competition, and it is expected that the rivalry will continue to grow each year.

Both schools combined raised more money than the surrounding districts of Allen, Plano, and Garland ISD combined.

The Wylie NHS is always busy year round. Last summer, different members participated in further fundraising for the Collin County Habitat for Humanity by washing cars and working shifts at Sonic. Along with the fundraising activities, members also help the professional builders at actual construction sites. Members also help at many local events, ranging from elementary school carnivals to college nights and book sales. The newest members of the National Honor Society will be inducted in November.
